DeeDee Animation Studio and its original project, Hoang Thi The: Fate & Destiny, were recently featured in France Link, a French-language news program by Vietnam Today, in a report exploring the transformation of Vietnam’s animation and visual effects (VFX) industry.
France Link: Bringing Vietnam’s Creative Industry to a French-Speaking Audience
France Link is a French-language news program produced by Vietnam Today, covering stories and developments from Vietnam for French-speaking audiences.
In its recent report on Vietnam’s animation and VFX industry, the program examined how the sector has evolved from primarily working on subcontracting projects to becoming increasingly involved in international productions while also developing original intellectual properties (IPs).
Vietnam’s Animation and VFX Industry: From Subcontracting to Global Production
The report highlighted the growing presence of Vietnamese artists and studios in international animated series, games, visual effects productions, and Hollywood blockbusters. Over the past decade, the whole Vietnam’s animation and VFX industry has undergone significant changes.
Once largely associated with relatively modest subcontracting work, Vietnamese studios and artists are now contributing to increasingly demanding international productions. This shift reflects not only the expansion of the global production ecosystem in Vietnam, but also the steady improvement of local production capabilities.
According to Ms. Nhu Le, Studio Manager at DeeDee Animation Studio, this development has been a gradual process rather than a sudden change:
“It is a constant evolution that has been going on for many years. In the last ten years, the Vietnamese animation and visual effects industry has progressed significantly. More and more studios are working for large international markets, and above all, the quality of production has improved considerably.”
She also emphasized the significance of Vietnamese teams participating in high-demand international productions:
“Participating in such demanding projects, including Hollywood superproductions, shows that the know-how of Vietnamese artists and production teams is more and more recognized internationally.”
For Vietnamese studios, however, international production is only one part of the industry’s development. Alongside strengthening their capabilities through global collaborations, an increasing number of studios are also looking toward developing and producing their own original works.
Hoang Thi The: Fate & Destiny: Developing Vietnamese Stories and Visual Identity
Featured in the report as an example of this shift is Hoang Thi The: Fate & Destiny, an original project produced by DeeDee Animation Studio in collaboration with Avalook.
The project is presented as Vietnam’s first animated documentary, offering a new visual approach to history through animation. From its early development stages, Hoang Thi The: Fate & Destiny has attracted attention for its distinctive visual direction and its inspiration from Vietnamese painting.
Rather than focusing solely on production services for international clients, projects such as Hoang Thi The: Fate & Destiny demonstrate another direction for Vietnamese animation: combining production expertise gained through international work with the development of original Vietnamese IP.
This balance between global collaboration and original creation is becoming increasingly relevant as the Vietnamese animation and VFX industry continues to evolve.
For Vietnamese studios, the long-term question is therefore not simply how far the country can go in international subcontracting, but also how effectively its creative teams can use their growing experience, technology, and production capabilities to create original works that can reach audiences beyond Vietnam.
