Internal training program Storyboard 101

Storyboard 101 is one of DeeDee Animation Studio's internal training programs, designed to continuously strengthen professional skills while fostering a culture of learning across the studio.

At DeeDee Animation Studio, internal training has become one of the most valued traditions. It provides an opportunity for team members to share knowledge, learn from one another, and develop the creative and technical skills that support their careers in animation.

Recently, DeeDee concluded its Storyboard 101 program after seven sessions totaling 22.5 hours of training, led by Ha Huy Hoang, Art Director and Animation Supervisor at DeeDee Animation Studio.

In animation, a storyboard is far more than a series of rough sketches. It is where a story begins to take shape through visual language, with every camera angle, cut, and movement carefully planned to guide the audience's emotions. With that in mind, the course was designed to provide participants with a solid foundation in storyboard production, covering everything from core concepts, workflow, and sketching techniques to essential cinematic principles such as composition, camera angles, camera movement, visual language, and storytelling.

One of the highlights of the program was a series of in-depth film scene analyses. Rather than simply studying how a sequence was staged, participants explored the creative reasoning behind each directorial decision - why a particular camera angle was chosen, why the camera moved in a certain way, or how composition influenced the emotional impact of a scene. By examining films through the lens of visual storytelling, they gained a deeper understanding of how cinematic language shapes rhythm, conveys meaning, and guides the audience's experience.

By the end of the course, many participants shared that their biggest takeaway was not simply learning a new production skill, but developing a new perspective on the role of storyboarding itself. Instead of viewing it as a part in pre-production, they came to recognize storyboard as the foundation of visual storytelling, where every camera angle, composition, and movement is driven by a clear narrative purpose rather than intuition alone.
