Client: MAKE
Project: Sunny Side Down
Type: Indie Animation, Sci-Fi, Short Series
Studio Role: Animation, Background Design, Compositing
Overview
Sunny Side Down is a six-episode indie sci-fi short series, with each episode running approximately two minutes. Despite its compact format and online distribution, the project demanded a level of quality comparable to premium animated productions.
Set in a surreal restaurant floating at the edge of a black hole, the series required a delicate balance between stylized storytelling and high-end execution across animation, background design, compositing, and FX.
DeeDee Animation Studio played a key role across almost episodes- not only handling production but also contributing creatively at a directing level, ensuring consistency in animation.
Story & Concept
The series follows Nat, a stranded human waitress with arrogant, mad-scientist tendencies, who spends her break time building an escape device to flee the cosmic void she’s trapped in. Alongside her is Yabba, a four-armed, ancient line cook who chain-smokes her way through endless breakfast shifts.
As director Natalia Poteryakhin describes:
“We wanted to capture that universal feeling of being completely stuck in life and trying to cope with how absurd our lives are, only blown up to a cosmic scale,” said Natalia Poteryakhin, director of Sunny Side Down. “Everyone tells themselves they’ll get out tomorrow. Nat is just saying it while stuck right in the middle of a supermassive black hole.”
Challenges
Scale & Production Complexity
Although each episode is only around two minutes long, the project involved:
~2000 production tasks
A high volume of animation shots and background assets (from eps 3 - 6)
Tight deadlines with multiple revision rounds
The challenge was not just volume- but maintaining consistent quality across every frame, despite the short-form format.
Animation
To meet the project’s ambition, the team implemented a structured animation pipeline with Toon Boom Harmony.
Special Pose → Key Animation → Inbetween → Compositing → FX
Animators had to:
Strictly follow character design, especially in special poses
Maintain fluid, expressive performances, avoiding stiffness
Continuously inject secondary actions (2nd actions) to enhance realism and personalityụ) để tăng tính chân thực và cá tính

A unique requirement was the integration of voice acting into animation decisions. Animators closely studied the pitch, rhythm, and tone of each line to create nuanced secondary motions- resulting in performances that feel alive and spontaneous.
Even the smallest details were treated with care such as a collapsing Jenga tower, a strip of paper slowly rolling out of a printer and background character actions. Even in the episode 5, the team put effort in researching a lot of reference about mice- the one-episode characters to to achieve movements that feel both believable and entertaining.

Background Design
The setting - a bizarre restaurant suspended in a black hole - required a strong visual identity. The world is filled with quirky alien customers and subtle easter eggs referencing classics like Star Wars and Star Trek, adding layers of engagement for the audience.
Hence, the background team focused heavily on:
Color palette & saturation control
Lighting variations across timelines (past vs present)
Mood consistency aligned with sci-fi parody tone

Even micro-details were carefully executed:
Cracked floor tiles
Dirt and stains on surfaces
Wear-and-tear across the environment
These elements helped ground the absurd setting in a sense of tangible reality.

Compositing & FX
The compositing and FX phase played a crucial role in bringing the cosmic setting to life. Despite handling a large volume of feedback, the team remained highly engaged in:
Fine-tuning lighting interactions
Enhancing atmospheric effects
Ensuring visual cohesion across shots

Every frame was polished to meet the client’s high expectations for a stylized yet immersive sci-fi world.
Kết quả
The project was met with satisfaction from the client, particularly regarding:
The expressive performance of secondary characters
The team’s ability to go above and beyond in animation quality
Client feedback includes:
“Coming together really well now, excited to release it next week!”
“This shot is very nice overall… you guys really nailed it and went above and beyond on the monster animation with nice head tilts and motion.”
Each episode received positive audience reactions, and the series has accumulated significant viewership on YouTube. Many viewers have expressed hopes that the series could gain attention from major platforms like Netflix or receive further investment for long-form development.

For DeeDee Animation Studio, Sunny Side Down was more than just a short series- it was an opportunity to:
Push the boundaries of performance-driven animation
Strengthen collaboration across departments
Deliver high-quality output under tight constraints
The success of the project became a strong source of motivation for the entire team, reinforcing a shared commitment to craftsmanship, creativity, and storytelling excellence.
