Warmly received by international audiences, Sunny Side Down, a hit series by MAKE Originals with contributions from DeeDee Animation Studio, has brought a vibrant new energy to YouTube.
Since the release of its trailer, Sunny Side Down has quickly captured attention thanks to its distinctive visual style and high-quality animation, well beyond what is typically expected from a YouTube series. The series consists of six 2-minute episodes, following Nat - a human waitress stranded in outer space.
For this project, DeeDee Animation Studio primarily handled animation production, while also contributing to background design and composition. Notably, the role of Animation Director was taken on by Mr. Doan Anh Kiet, Head of Animation at DeeDee.
What sets Sunny Side Down apart is its witty, satirical storytelling, cleverly packed with references to classic space-themed films. These familiar elements not only add an extra layer of enjoyment but also make the series more accessible and relatable to a wide audience. Despite its short 2-3 minute format, each episode delivers unexpected twists and engaging pacing, keeping viewers curious and eager for what comes next.
The list of characters from the series consist of a wide range of aliens with diverse shapes and sizes. This became a highlight during production, offering DeeDee’s team the opportunity to experiment with animation approaches for unconventional character designs created by MAKE Originals. Experimenting with movement for such unsual forms brought both creative challenges and excitement to the process.
With smooth, expressive animation at its core, Sunny Side Down has quickly resonated with audiences, sparking expectations that the series could attract attention from major platforms like Netflix.
As of now, the series has released five episodes and has already surpassed 1 million views on YouTube.
