Behind the Scenes of Lord of Goblins: Bringing a Fantasy World to Life

The trailer for the webtoon Lord of Goblins marked a special milestone for DeeDee Animation Studio in animating action anime. This project gave our team the chance to both stay faithful to the original source and explore new ways of adding depth and movement, delivering an experience that felt more vivid and captivating for the audience.

In 2023, DeeDee Animation Studio produced the animated trailer for Lord of Goblins in collaboration with Moonquill, an international webcomic publishing platform. While most webtoon trailers are limited to simple motion comics, Moonquill entrusted DeeDee with creating a full animation trailer. For our team, it was a valuable opportunity to challenge ourselves in a new area and bring readers a richer, more dynamic experience.

This special project embraced the popular “anime” style, serving both as a challenge and as an opportunity for DeeDee’s team to learn, refine our craft, and fully enjoy the creative process.

The trailer was designed in an anime style

To preserve the spirit of the original, the team combined hand-drawn animation with cut-out animation in anime style, ensuring the unique linework and expressions of the webtoon were fully conveyed. As a result, every frame remained faithful to the comic while gaining depth and motion, making the characters and world feel alive on screen.

Hand-drawn animation brought the highest level of artistry to the trailer

The fight scenes, in particular, posed a fascinating technical challenge. The team had to balance staying true to the existing frames of the comic with the freedom to choreograph movement, camera angles, and rhythm in ways that made the action flow dynamically. This blend of adaptation and innovation elevated the trailer from static frames to an engaging animated piece.
